The Consolidated B-24 Liberator design was generated from the successful airframe of an existing flying boat model (explaining the enlarged fuselage and high-mount wing assembly). The B-24 would go on to become the most-produced aircraft of the United States in the Second World War.
The high-mounted wing design allowed warplanners with a heavy bomber of increased range and better speeds. Four radial engines mounted across its broad and expansive wings.
Fielding an array of defensive armaments in the form of 12.7mm ".50 caliber" heavy machine guns and various rated engines. The most definitive of the B-24 series would become the "J" models that would see no fewer than 6,600 produced.
Able to carry nearly 9,000lbs of internal stores, the B-24J was also fitted with improved radials in the form of the R-1830-65 and an autopilot system. From there, the system was tested out in a few other formats that would include a fuel tanker, reconnaissance model and patrol / maritime derivatives.
